China has recently announced their 12th 5-year plan. What is unique about this one is its emphasis on alternative energy sources and LEDs. They are going to focus more internally, and some reports call for a 10 times increase in the use of LEDs for lighting in the next five years, from 2% to 20%.
There are some expectations that this will be disruptive in the industry with unstable pricing, possible drop in quality, etc. Whatever, it should be an interesting period.
The LED industry is really just getting started, and it potentially represents an 80% savings on power used, at least in some cases. There is additional savings when there is no need to run the air conditioner to remove the excess heat generated by the old incandescent bulbs.
LEDs have found a place in the RV environment, though the RV manufacturers still cling to the old style lighting. The full-timers and boon-dockers already know that LED lighting makes a big difference in their lifestyles, and they are converting to LEDs at a rapid pace. This same wave will sweep through the domestic housing environment soon as the price of energy rises and the need becomes more apparent.
So watch for the world to change, and this time it will change for the good. LED lighting will lead the way.
